At the Frankfurt Book Fair 2018, I visited the exhibition of Banned Books in Turkey organized by the exiled Turkish publisher Ragip Zarakolu. I brought from there a nice postcard with Selahattin Demirtaş's smiling face. He is here present at the PEN International office, encouraging our work with his courageous gaze.
Selahattin Demirtaş has recently been declared an honorary member of PEN Mexico and Catalan PEN. We have been very moved by this nice note from him, written on the first day of the year:
"Dear members of PEN International Board,
I would heartily like to thank you for your statement that draws attention to the political captivity status of myself and thousands of other fellow prisoners and thank you for your call for our release. Thanks to friends like you I always feel free myself. Though I am shut in walls I will decisively keep on working for a peaceful and better world.
I would like you to know that your support and solidarity gives me honour and bolster my morale greatly. I am grateful to each of you. I wish you a happy new year and a good future. With the hope that we will be able to meet in the future,
